Application
Polyvinylpyrrolidone, commonly known as povidone, is a versatile and multifunctional polymer used predominantly in pharmaceutical formulations. It is primarily employed in solid-dosage forms, where it acts as a binder in wet-granulation processes for tableting. This capability is enhanced by its solubility in various solvents, including alcohols, amines, and water, which allows it to be added directly to powder blends and granulated in situ. Povidone's role extends beyond binding; it also serves as a solubilizer and stabilizer, enhancing the dissolution of poorly soluble drugs and increasing the solubility of active drugs in both oral and parenteral formulations. Additionally, povidone is used as a coating agent for active pharmaceutical ingredients, as well as a suspending and viscosity-increasing agent in topical and oral solutions. Its ability to function as a stabilizing agent makes it valuable in maintaining the consistency and effectiveness of pharmaceutical products. Special grades of pyrogen-free povidone are available for applications requiring high purity, such as in parenteral formulations.
