Application
Iron(III) fluoride serves as a catalyst in organic reactions, offering unique properties due to its limited solubility in water and insolubility in alcohol and ether. When heated in hydrogen, it reduces to iron(II) fluoride and finally to the metal, providing versatility in various chemical processes. In aqueous solutions, its hydrolysis is minimal, but in the presence of alkali metal fluorides, it can form complex fluorides like MFeF4, M2FeF5.xH2O, and M3FeF6. Its magnetic behavior is notable, with susceptibility dependent on field strength between 63° and 293°K, and the trihydrate form possessing a magnetic moment of μ = 2.25 B.M. at 300°K.
