Application
Chondroitin sulfate sodium salt serves a crucial role in the treatment of osteoarthritis and is a key component in pharmaceutical formulations. This product, typically extracted from shark bone, is characterized as a white or nearly white, hygroscopic powder that is soluble in water but insoluble in organic solvents like acetone and ethanol. In aqueous solution, it displays a viscous nature, though this viscosity diminishes when exposed to acids or bases. Its ion exchange properties allow it to form various metal salts with cations, leading to precipitation. When hydrolyzed with 5 mol/L hydrochloric acid at 37°C for three hours, it loses sulfuric acid to become chondroitin. Additionally, sodium chondroitin sulfate is used as a secondary reference standard in pharmaceutical analysis, utilizing advanced techniques such as size-exclusion and ion-pair high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to determine its analyte within formulations.
