Application

Biotin-dextran serves as a tool in tissue staining to facilitate the detection of neurons using avidin-conjugated systems. Once introduced, it is absorbed by neuronal processes and transported in both directions, infiltrating axon boutons in an anterograde manner and dendritic processes in a retrograde manner. The staining remains visible in fixed and sectioned tissue from two days up to two weeks following its injection into the brain or spinal cord, and it may also be used on cut nerve tracts. To visualize biotinylated neurons, either light or electron microscopy is employed, following incubation with an avidin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate and the use of the electron-dense substrate 3,3μ-diaminobenzidine (DAB).
