    Application
2-Butyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol is a crucial component in the synthesis of polyesters, primarily due to its properties as an asymmetric hydrophobic diol. This specialized compound enhances the flexibility, solubility, and resistance to hydrolysis of polyesters while maintaining a lower viscosity compared to traditional materials like neopentyl glycol. It plays a significant role in the production of polyurethane powders, coil, and can coatings, as well as various stoving enamels. When used in powder polyester coatings, the diol promotes outdoor durability and improves leveling thanks to its reduced melt viscosity, all while ensuring that the glass transition temperature remains at a desirable level of at least 50°C. Additionally, 2-butyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol is instrumental in decreasing the crystallinity of polyesters, making it an excellent choice as a coglycol in outdoor durable solventborne polyester paints with enhanced clarity and shelf life. Its use in unsaturated polyester gel coats offers exceptional hydrolytic stability and improved solubility in styrene. Furthermore, its acrylic esters and alkoxylates are valuable in UV-curable coatings for substrates with low surface energy due to enhanced adhesion. In elastomers, it serves effectively as a chain extender, providing higher clarity and supporting various polyurethane applications.
