Titanium monoxide (TiO) serves multiple purposes across a variety of applications due to its unique structural and chemical properties. Primarily known for its rock-salt structure that allows for both oxygen and titanium vacancies, stoichiometric TiO offers flexibility in its lattice parameters, varying within a small range under different oxygen atom percentages. When synthesized by heating titanium metal with titanium dioxide at high temperatures, this compound is utilized notably in vacuum deposition processes. Furthermore, it finds extensive use in the manufacturing of sunscreens, UV-blocking agents in cosmetics, varnishes, wood preservatives, textile fibers, and packaging films due to its ability to absorb and block UV radiation. TiO is also used as a pigment in paints, an opacifying agent, a component in welding rod fluxes, in optical coatings, and as a catalyst. Additionally, it serves in ceramic finishes, various forms of plastics and elastomers, coated fabrics, printing inks, roofing granules, glass, and glazes. Notably, at elevated temperatures, TiO can transform into other titanium oxides, which broadens its application range in temperature-sensitive processes.
