Application
Tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate is a white or light yellowish brown paste specifically developed as a low-toxicity catalyst to facilitate the ring-opening polymerization of polylactide. It is soluble in petroleum ether but insoluble in water, offering useful compatibility with a variety of solvents. This compound, with an oral acute poisoning LD50 of 3400 mg/kg in rats and an acute percutaneous poisoning LD50 greater than 2000 mg/kg in rabbits, is considered relatively safe to handle under appropriate conditions. As a tin-based reagent, it plays a crucial role in catalyzing the transformation of lactide monomers into polylactide polymers, which are widely used for their biodegradable properties.
