It is also extensively applied in cleaning products and cosmetics. While its safety for consumers and the environment has been affirmed through comprehensive evaluations, caution is advised due to potential irritation to the eyes and skin, as well as the possibility of containing trace amounts of the carcinogen dioxane. The Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association recommends limiting its concentration to very low levels to minimize any adverse effects, especially given the findings from a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study that noted severe irritation and other harmful effects in laboratory animals at concentrations above 5%. Despite these concerns, it remains a prevalent ingredient across various formulations.
