In nuclear power reactors, Samarium Oxide acts as a crucial neutron absorber, effectively regulating nuclear reactions. Furthermore, it is an efficient catalyst in chemical processes, particularly in facilitating the dehydration of primary alcohols to form aldehydes and ketones. Additionally, when treated with perchloric acid, it forms samarium perchlorate, which is utilized as a reference material for verifying the wavelength scale of spectrophotometers within the 200 to 500 nm range.
