It plays a key role in the manufacturing of optical and infrared absorbing glasses, significantly enhancing their ability to absorb infrared radiation. In nuclear power reactors, Samarium Oxide acts as a crucial neutron absorber, effectively regulating nuclear reactions. Furthermore, it is an efficient catalyst in chemical processes, particularly in facilitating the dehydration of primary alcohols to form aldehydes and ketones. Additionally, when treated with perchloric acid, it forms samarium perchlorate, which is utilized as a reference material for verifying the wavelength scale of spectrophotometers within the 200 to 500 nm range. Its application extends to the formation of other samarium-based materials through evaporation and crystallization processes. Samarium Oxide can be produced by burning the metal in air or oxygen at temperatures exceeding 150°C or via the thermal decomposition of samarium carbonate, nitrate, oxalate, or sulfate.
