    Application
Poly(vinyl acetate), also known as PVAc with the chemical identifier 9003-20-7, serves primarily as an adhesive and a binder, particularly in water-based or emulsion paints. This polymer is composed of repeating acetoxyethylene units and typically has a degree of polymerization ranging from 100 to 5000. PVAc is a leathery, colorless thermoplastic that softens at relatively low temperatures and remains relatively stable when exposed to light and oxygen. Although non-crystalline and clear, the ester groups in PVAc are sensitive to base hydrolysis, which can slowly transform it into polyvinyl alcohol and acetic acid. Additionally, under alkaline conditions, boron compounds like boric acid or borax can cause PVAc to cross-link, forming tackifying precipitates or slime. The synthesis of vinyl acetate, the precursor to PVAc, is efficiently achieved through the reaction of acetylene with acetic acid. Furthermore, PVAc demonstrates solubility in various solvents including acetone, benzene, butyl acetate, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, dichloroethylene, ethanol, ethyl acetate, methanol, MIBK, THF, and toluene, extending its versatility in applications.
