Application

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) serves as a versatile material with a wide range of applications. It is a colorless and rigid polymer known for its capability to crystallize due to its structural uniformity, which significantly influences its physical characteristics based on its crystallinity. During fiber production, molten PET is extruded through spinnerets into cooler air, forming initially weak and largely amorphous filaments. These filaments are then drawn at temperatures above 80°C to enhance molecular orientation and crystallinity. Subsequently, they are heated to around 200°C under tension to attain dimensional stability and maximum crystallinity. The production of PET film follows a similar process involving extrusion, orientation, and stabilization. Additionally, PET demonstrates good resistance to diluted acids and alkalis and is insoluble in many common solvents, although it can dissolve in aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons when warmed. This robust material softens at temperatures above 250°C, making it suitable for diverse uses, including fibers, films, and as an engineering material in automotive parts, electrical components, and household appliances.
