The Platinum Iridium wire, with a diameter of 1.0mm (0.04in) and a hard finish, serves multiple specialized purposes due to its unique properties. Primarily, it is utilized in crafting non-standard thermocouples, electrical contacts, and electrodes for medical research, benefiting from iridium's contribution to enhance mechanical characteristics. This alloy boasts increased resistance to corrosion while maintaining workability. Composed of varying percentages of iridium, the alloy's features vary: lower percentages result in ductile properties, whereas higher iridium contents increase hardness, reaching a Brinell hardness of up to 400. This versatility makes it suitable for diverse applications such as instruments, jewelry, surgical tools, and industrial electrical contacts. Notably, iridium addition does not alter platinum's color, and different alloy compositions exhibit varying solubility in aqua regia, with the 5% iridium alloy dissolving readily and the 30% alloy dissolving more slowly.
