As a strong Lewis acid, it is employed as a catalyst facilitating a range of reactions, including the Diels-Alder reaction, nucleophilic substitution of allylic and benzylic acetates, and the acylation of phenols, alcohols, and thiols with anhydrides. It also plays a crucial role in asymmetric radical additions to olefins and enantioselective 1,3-Dipolar Cycloadditions of diazoacetates and olefins, as well as acting as a precatalyst for the enantioselective synthesis of isoxazolidinones. In addition to its catalytic applications, this compound exhibits high anodic stability, making it a valuable electrolyte for rechargeable magnesium batteries.
