Application
Indium(III) fluoride, a highly pure white powder with 99.999% purity, serves as a crucial catalyst in various chemical processes. It is particularly effective in promoting the chemoselective addition of trimethylsilyl cyanide (TMSCN) to aldehydes, facilitating the formation of cyanohydrins. This compound is stable in both hot and cold water, although it is very sparingly soluble in water at room temperature, with a solubility of 0.040 g/100 ml. However, it dissolves readily in dilute acids. Indium(III) fluoride also plays a significant role in the synthesis of non-oxide glasses. With its melting point at 1170°C and boiling point above 1200°C, it remains stable under high-temperature conditions. The material can be reduced to almost pure indium fluoride by a slow hydrogen stream at 300°C, or further reduced to the metal by a fast hydrogen stream, underlining its versatility in various chemical applications.
