While insoluble in water, it readily dissolves in alcohol, oils, and aqueous sodium hydroxide solutions. As the foundation for solvent-fixatives like Abitol, Methyl abietate (Abalyn), and hydrogenated Methyl abietate (Hercolyn), Hydroabietyl Alcohol finds significant use in creating fragrances, especially as a fixative in pine and other scent profiles. Rosin, its natural precursor, has seen use in cost-effective perfume compositions, particularly in certain soaps.
