Application
Dicalcium silicate serves a critical role in the production of cement. Its primary purpose lies in its ability to crystallize in various polymorphic forms, each contributing uniquely to the material's properties. In particular, the β form of dicalcium silicate is significant even though it's metastable. It can transform into the less dense γ form at temperatures below 500 ℃, which may lead to disintegration of cement clinker if cooled slowly. However, this issue is generally mitigated in industrial settings where clinkers are fired above 1200 ℃. At these high temperatures, the incorporation of elements like Al3+, Mg2+, P3+, Na+, and K+ stabilizes dicalcium silicate's high-temperature forms. Consequently, the cooling rate and the chemical composition of the clinker determine which polymorphic forms are present, with the β form commonly found alongside the α and α' forms in industrial applications.
