Application
Beeswax is a versatile product derived as a secondary secretion from bees during the harvesting of honey. This natural substance, obtained from the honeycomb, is processed and refined to produce yellow beeswax, which is used globally with consistent chemical composition. Its unique properties, including the presence of cerolein, myricyl alcohol, and myricyl palmitate, make it soluble in hot alcohol and partially soluble in cold alcohol. Beeswax is primarily employed to create flexible, elastic, and stretchable edible films that enhance mechanical properties and reduce water vapor permeability. The wax also helps adjust the consistency in various applications such as creams, ointments, and water-in-oil emulsions. Beyond yellow beeswax, white wax-a bleached variation-serves similar purposes, such as polishing sugar-coated tablets and modulating the melting point of suppositories. Additionally, white beeswax is incorporated as a film coating in sustained-release tablets, contributing to controlled drug absorption within the body by affecting the release from ion-exchange resin beads.
