Application

Barium stearate is a white crystalline solid mainly utilized as a thermo-stabilizer and lubricant in industrial applications. Despite its limited use as a stabilizer, it plays a significant role as a lubricant during film calendaring, enhancing the heat-resistant stability, oiliness, and processability of polyvinyl chloride products like transparent films, leathery materials, rigid sheets, and tubing. In addition, barium stearate serves as a flatting and sanding agent in lacquers, coatings, and inks, and acts as a drying lubricant in rubber production. It also finds application in dry-salt fire extinguishers to prevent caking. While traditional production methods via saponification metathesis are technically mature, they entail considerable water consumption and produce high-concentration salt-containing wastewater, which poses environmental challenges. Alternative methods involving stearic acid and hydrated barta, despite similar drawbacks, yield a fluffier product.
