Application
Barium manganate serves a dual purpose: as a less toxic alternative to Scheele's green in fresco painting, and as a versatile oxidizing agent in organic synthesis. This blue to dark blue-black fine crystalline powder, with the chemical formula BaMnO4, contains manganese in a +6 oxidation state. It is typically produced by heating manganese dioxide with barium carbonate or nitrate, or by precipitating potassium manganate with barium chloride. As a pigment, it imparts a green hue, historically known as manganese blue. In organic chemistry, barium manganate is employed to efficiently and selectively oxidize alcohols to carbonyls and aldehydes, convert diols to lactones and thiols to disulfides, and transform aromatic amines to azo-compounds. Additionally, it is used in the oxidation of hydroquinone to p-benzoquinone and the conversion of benzylamine to benzaldehyde.
