Application
Ball clay serves a fundamental role in enhancing the plasticity of ceramic materials. Its fine-grained nature and the presence of a small amount of montmorillonite make it highly plastic, allowing it to be blended with less plastic clays to achieve the desired workability. Over 85% of ball clay particles are extremely small, measuring 1 μm or less in diameter, contributing to its light to white color, which can turn to white buff upon firing. Despite having a pyrometric cone equivalent rarely exceeding 33, ball clay is invaluable in various ceramic compositions due to its ability to improve workability and strength during drying. Common applications include its use in vitreous sanitaryware, chinaware, floor and wall tiles, spark plug porcelain, semivitreous whiteware, and glass melting-pot bodies. While it provides significant benefits, ball clay can also cause high-drying shrinkage, leading to warping and cracking, which is typically mitigated by adding grog. Derived from its extraction as ball-shaped lumps, ball clay is akin to china clay but with greater plasticity and less refractoriness due to a higher silica content. Its extensive industrial applications include use in ceramics, coatings, plastics, rubbers, paints, cosmetics, and more, showcasing its versatility as a filler and a contributor to various products.
