Application

5-Aminolevulinic acid methyl ester hydrochloride is used in photodynamic therapy primarily for the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer, such as basal cell carcinoma. As a prodrug, when applied topically, it is metabolized into protoporphyrin IX, a photosensitizer that accumulates in targeted skin lesions. Upon exposure to red light, protoporphyrin IX generates toxic singlet oxygen, leading to the destruction of cell membranes and the subsequent elimination of tumour cells.
