Application
4-Phenylethynylphthalic Anhydride (PEPA) serves as an essential research chemical known for its application in polymer chemistry. It acts as a reactive capping agent, particularly in the synthesis of polyimides and aromatic oligo-polyimides, enhancing their performance. When used in its fluorinated form, these oligoimides with phenylethynyl end groups melt within the temperature range of 250-350 °C, forming a low viscosity liquid. As the molecular weight of these oligoimides increases, so does their melt viscosity. Upon thermal curing at 371 °C, the resulting thermoset polyimide resins exhibit excellent thermal and mechanical properties, including a high glass transition temperature of 300 °C, substantial flexural strength of 135.5 MPa, a flexural modulus of 3.1 GPa, and a tensile strength of 65.7 MPa, along with an elongation at break of 3.9%.
