Application
3-Hexylthiophene is a crucial intermediate used in the synthesis of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), a widely researched polymer for its application in polymer solar cells. This compound, which may appear as a colorless transparent or light yellow liquid, serves as the starting material for creating P3HT, which is essential in producing organic phototransistors (OPTs) through its nanofibers. P3HT remains the most extensively studied polymer in solar cell technology due to its ability to achieve typical efficiency levels ranging from 4-5%. However, with the advancement of new fullerene materials that better align with the energy levels of P3HT, specifically at HOMO 5.0 eV and LUMO 3.0 eV, the efficiency of these solar cells can now reach up to 6.5%.
