Ferrocene-terminated alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (Fc SAM) on gold can serve as attractive molecular probes for studies related to interfacial electrochemistry and interface physicochemical properties. This molecular probe can be used to explore how electrochemical responses are transformed based on the electronic and structural properties of the electrode/monolayer/electrolyte interface.
Preparation of monolayers based on 11-ferrocenyl-1-undecanethiol
· The clean Au substrates were immersed for at least 12 h in ethanol solutions containing 0.1 mM 11-ferrocenyl-1-undecanethiol followed by rinsing with ethanol and drying under a stream of N2 gas.
· For the mixed SAM/dilution experiments, an as-prepared SAM from 1 mM 1-decanethiol in ethanol was subsequently submerged in 0.1 mM 11-ferrocenyl-1-undecanethiol (in ethanol) for at least 30 mins followed by rinsing with ethanol and drying under a stream of N2 gas.
