Application
Ruthenium carbonyl is a versatile catalyst used in various chemical processes due to its unique properties. It appears as orange plates or powder and is soluble in non-polar organic solvents. Primarily, it functions as a hydrogen-transfer catalyst and plays a vital role in numerous catalytic reactions. Notably, it is employed in the carbonylation catalysis of the allylic amination of unactivated olefins by nitroarenes and facilitates the reductive carbonylation of mononitro aromatic compounds to produce carbamates. Additionally, ruthenium carbonyl acts as a catalyst for cycloaddition reactions and serves as a precursor for the synthesis of ruthenium nanoparticles. In particular, it catalyzes the intermolecular [3+2+1] cycloaddition of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones with silylacetylenes and carbon monoxide to form alpha-pyrones and assists in the coupling of silanes with thiols, alcohols, and amines with high turnover number and frequency. As a triruthenium dodecacarbonyl compound, it features a core composed of a ruthenium equilateral triangle, with each atom bonded to both axial and equatorial carbonyl ligands, and is instrumental as a precursor for various organoruthenium compounds. Moreover, it catalyzes several other reactions, including the conversion of enynes to catechol derivatives, [2+2+1] cycloaddition processes, 3-component couplings, and reactions leading to β,γ-unsaturated γ-butyrolactams. Ruthenium carbonyl is also utilized in ester decarboxylation, hydroamination, C-H bond activation, sp3 C-H bond arylation and carbonylation, amination of α-hydroxy amides, and as part of a ruthenium/halide catalytic system for C-C bond formation between alkynes and unsaturated carbonyl compounds.
