Application
Poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) is primarily used as an interlayer in safety glass laminates due to its excellent optical clarity, adhesion to glass surfaces, and ability to withstand a range of temperatures without deformation. This synthetic resin is derived from a condensation reaction involving poly(vinyl alcohol) and butyraldehyde, resulting in a molecular structure that includes butyral, alcohol hydroxyl, and acetate groups. These functional groups lend PVB a unique combination of rigidity, flexibility, and impact resistance. The safety glass application typically involves PVB being mixed with 30-40% plasticizer and extruded into a film, which is then layered between sheets of glass and bonded under heat and pressure. Beyond safety glass, PVB finds use in special coatings, adhesives, ceramic transfer paper, and aluminum foil paper, demonstrating its versatility. In the coating industry, PVB enhances primer adhesion and elasticity while improving waterproofness and color retention in textiles. Its role in adhesives ranges from high-performance structural to thermosetting adhesives. Furthermore, PVB is pivotal in creating vacuum aluminized paper, which holds significant market share in China. Additional applications of PVB include special inks, waterproof fibers, and even medical uses such as dental restorations and wound dressings.
