Application
Calcium hydrogenphosphate dihydrate serves as an essential calcium salt and hydrate with diverse applications. Primarily used as an excipient and a nutritional supplement in the health food sector, it provides calcium and phosphorus. Its unique properties, like good compaction and flow, make it beneficial in pharmaceutical products, especially in tablet formulations. The compound is characterized by its brittle fracture deformation, allowing a smoother transition from lab to production scales, although it requires lubrication during tableting due to its abrasive nature. For this purpose, about 1% w/w of magnesium stearate or sodium stearyl fumarate is often used. There are two main particle-size grades, with the coarse-grade being utilized in direct-compression formulations. Notably stable and nonhygroscopic at room temperature, calcium hydrogenphosphate dihydrate may lose water of crystallization under specific conditions, necessitating careful packaging. Additionally, it finds use in toothpaste and dentifrice formulations for its abrasive qualities.
