Silicon Nitride, a slightly beige powder, is integral in the preparation of thermally conductive Poly(Methyl Methacrylate)/Silicon Nitride nanocomposites through click chemistry. This compound, with the molecular formula Si3N4, combines silicon and nitrogen to form a robust white solid known for its high melting point and chemical stability, even in the presence of dilute hydrofluoric acid and hot sulfuric acid. Silicon Nitride boasts high strength across a broad temperature range, impressive fracture toughness, hardness, and excellent wear resistance. Its significant thermal shock resistance allows it to be utilized in diverse fields. In the automotive industry, it serves as a crucial material for engine components, and due to its high shock resistance, it is also used in bearings. Silicon Nitride ceramics withstand the severe thermal shocks encountered in spacecraft hydrogen/oxygen rocket engines. Additionally, it functions as an abrasive and cutting tool due to its hardness and wear resistance, and in electronics, it acts as an insulator and chemical barrier during integrated circuit production. Silicon Nitride can be manufactured by heating powdered silicon in a nitrogen atmosphere at 1300-1400°C, through the diimide route involving SiCl and NH3, or by carbothermal reduction of silicon dioxide at 1300-1400°C in a nitrogen atmosphere.
