Silicon monoxide serves a crucial role in thin film and hybrid integrated circuit manufacturing, particularly when in situ silicon dioxide growth is impractical due to the absence of silicon. Its ease of deposition through physical vapor deposition makes it a preferred material for creating protective surface films on aluminum coatings, optical components, mirrors, dielectrics, and insulators. Typically prepared by heating silicon dioxide with silicon, carbon, and hydrogen or hydrocarbons to produce the monoxide at around 1000°C, silicon monoxide vapor is readily condensed and powdered for commercial distribution, eliminating the need for in-house preparation by integrated circuit manufacturers.
