Application
Polyethylene glycol (PEG) serves a versatile role in pharmaceutical formulations due to its unique physicochemical properties. As a family of linear polymers derived from the condensation of ethylene oxide and water, PEGs vary in molecular weight, influencing their physical state and application. Lower molecular weights (200-600) are liquid and serve as solvents and viscosity adjusters, while higher molecular weights (1000 and above) are solid and lend themselves to uses such as ointment bases, suppository components, and tablet binders. PEGs are valued for their water solubility, stability, and non-irritating nature, making them ideal for controlled-release systems and enhancing the solubility of poorly soluble drugs. They are also incorporated into soft gelatin capsules, film coatings, and microparticle formulations to improve dosage forms and drug delivery. Despite their reactivity compared to fats, PEGs remain an essential ingredient in pharmaceuticals, providing flexibility and improved performance across various drug delivery systems.
