Application
Polybutene is primarily produced through the Ziegler-Natta polymerization of 1-butene, resulting in a predominantly isotactic polymer with high molecular weight. Its most distinctive properties include the ability to exist in various crystalline forms, showcasing a versatility in applications. The polymer offers a melting point and stiffness which bridge high-density and low-density polyethylenes, while its thermal stability is balanced between that of polyethylene and polypropylene. With a robust resistance to oxidative and chemical environments, similar to polypropylene, polybutene also features exceptional resistance to environmental stress cracking. A notable attribute is its high creep resistance, attributed to its numerous ethyl side chains and significant molecular weight. These qualities make polybutene ideal for manufacturing extruded pipes which excel in withstanding rupture under pressure. Such pipes are extensively used in plumbing systems for both hot and cold water, as well as in the conveyance of abrasive and corrosive materials. Beyond these applications, polybutene serves as a binder and viscosity-increasing agent in cosmetics, is utilized in adhesives, caulks, sealants, and gum bases, and plays roles in fuel and lubricant additives. Its scope extends to electrical insulation, as well as modifiers and dispersants in asphalt, resin, and rubber production.
