Description
Nylon 12 is a nylon polymer. It is made from omega-aminolauric acid or laurolactam monomers, each of which has 12 carbon atoms, hence the name "nylon 12". It is one of several nylon polymers.
Molecular Formula
(C12H23NO)n
Canonical SMILES
O=C1CCCCCCCCCCCN1
Density
1.01 g/mL at 25 °C (lit.)
Application
Nylon 12 has a wide range of applications as a polyamide additive. Nylon 12 is mainly used for packaging material films in the food industry and sterilization films and bags in the pharmaceutical and medical fields. When added to polyethylene films, it improves water vapor permeability and aroma impermeability. It is also available in sheet and sintered powder for metal coating.
Features And Benefits
Nylon 12 exhibits properties intermediate between short-chain aliphatic nylons and polyolefins. At 178-180°C, the melting point of nylon 12 is the lowest among important polyamides. Its mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength and abrasion resistance are similar to nylon 6 and nylon 66. Low water absorption and density of 1.01 g/m. Nylon 12 is also chemically resistant and insensitive to stress cracking.
