Application
Ethylene Dichloride (EDC), also known as 1,2-dichloroethane, is primarily utilized in the synthesis of vinyl chloride, the key component in producing polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products such as pipes, furniture, and automobile parts. Additionally, EDC serves as a versatile industrial solvent for applications such as textile cleaning and metal degreasing and is instrumental in the production of various chemical intermediates, including methyl chloroform and ethylene amines. It also finds use as a dispersant in rubber and plastics and acts as a wetting and penetrating agent in several processes. Historically an additive in leaded gasoline and a fumigant for grains and soil, its use in these areas has been restricted due to its toxicity. EDC is produced through the reaction of chlorine or anhydrous hydrochloric acid with ethylene and remains one of the most widely used chemicals in the United States due to its multifaceted applications in manufacturing and industry.

Corrosivity
Corrodes iron and other metals at elevated temperatures when in contact with water.;Will not corrode metals;Iron and zinc do not corrode when dry 1,2-dichloroethane is used, whereas aluminum shows strong dissolution. Increased water content leads to increased corrosion of iron and zinc; aluminum, however, corrodes less.
