The anisotropy of Co(II) ions can be controlled by rational selection of ligands, such as 1,2-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino)acenaphthene (dpp-BIAN) and pyridine to achieve Co (II)-single ion magnet (SIM) design.
· Synthesis of [(dpp-BIAN)0Co(II)I2]
The reaction between 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene and cobalt diiodide in a solution of acetonitrile resulted in complex [(dpp-BIAN)0Co(II)I2]. The reaction proceeded in an inert atmosphere on heating and was accompanied by a rapid change in the color of the solution from green to red-brown.
· Synthesis of [(Py)2CoI2]
When pyridine was allowed to react with cobalt(II) iodide in a 2:1 molar ratio in toluene, complex [(Py)2CoI2] was isolated. Dry CoI2 was used for the synthesis, in which a toluene medium reacted heterogeneously with two equivalents of pyridine.
