    2-Methyl-1,3-propanediol (MPD) is a versatile chemical compound employed in a range of applications due to its unique properties, stemming from its branched and irregular molecular structure. This structure contributes to the formation of noncrystalline resins that enhance the performance of various polyesters used in solvent- and waterborne coatings, providing them with lower viscosity, improved processability, flexibility, weatherability, and toughness compared to traditional alternatives like neopentyl glycol. MPD is particularly valuable in developing paints with low volatile organic compound (VOC) content, serving as an essential component in two-component polyurethane and coil coatings. Beyond paints, MPD is integral in producing glass-fiber-reinforced unsaturated polyesters and gel coats. In the modification of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), it enhances properties such as dye uptake in fibers and clarity, toughness, elongation, and shrinkage resistance in films. Additionally, MPD finds application in the formulation of plasticizers, elastomers, adhesives, cosmetics, and personal care products, making it a critical ingredient in both industrial and consumer markets.
