Structurally, it features a phosphonic acid anchoring group, a flexible butyl linker, and a 2,7-dibromo-substituted dimethylacridine moiety that introduces steric hindrance to minimize intermolecular aggregation.

DMAcPA serves dual purposes: as an independent hole transport/extraction layer or as a dopant introduced into perovskite precursor formulations. When used as a dopant, it enhances perovskite film morphology, reduces excess PbI₂, and passivates deep-level trap states at grain boundaries and surfaces. This leads to denser, more uniform films with suppressed non-radiative recombination.

This SAM material eliminates the need for conventional hole transport layers such as PEDOT:PSS or PTAA, simplifying the device architecture. High-efficiency p-i-n perovskite solar cells incorporating DMAcPA have demonstrated impressive power conversion efficiency and operational durability under light soaking.
