9CPA (3-(9H-Carbazol-9-yl)propanoic acid) is a carbazole-based small molecule engineered to form high-quality self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on conductive electrode surfaces. Comprising a carbazole core, a propyl spacer, and a carboxylic acid anchoring group, 9CPA functions as an efficient hole-selective layer (HSL) in organic and perovskite photovoltaic devices.

This SAM material is particularly effective in p–i–n perovskite solar cells and non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) organic solar cells. Its molecular structure enables high monolayer packing density and promotes favorable energy level alignment at the interface, thereby improving hole extraction and boosting device performance.

Compared to its structural analogue 9CAA, 9CPA features a longer alkyl spacer, which enhances monolayer ordering and interfacial contact with the substrate. This contributes to improved device stability and charge transport. In tin–lead (Sn–Pb) alloyed perovskite solar cells, 9CPA has outperformed traditional materials like PEDOT:PSS in both efficiency and operational durability.

9CPA is fully compatible with solution processing methods using common polar solvents, enabling facile deposition under mild conditions.
