9CAA (2-(9H-Carbazol-9-yl)acetic acid) is a small organic molecule based on a carbazole core, engineered for the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on conductive substrates. It features a carboxylic acid anchoring group connected via a methylene spacer to a carbazole core, enabling strong interfacial binding and efficient charge extraction.

As a SAM material, 9CAA is particularly suitable for use as a hole transport or extraction layer in non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) organic solar cells and p-i-n structured perovskite solar cells. The carboxylic acid group binds effectively to metal oxide surfaces such as fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO), supporting the formation of well-ordered monolayers that enhance charge selectivity and reduce recombination.

In tin–lead (Sn–Pb) perovskite solar cells, 9CAA has shown advantages over phosphonic acid analogs in terms of interfacial alignment, electronic coupling, and crystallinity of the active layer. Devices incorporating 9CAA have demonstrated excellent stability, maintaining high efficiency after extended storage in inert conditions.

Thanks to its compatibility with mild solution-based processing, 9CAA serves as a promising alternative to PEDOT:PSS, enabling seamless integration into scalable and flexible photovoltaic manufacturing.
