2,2'-Bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (dcbpy) is a high-purity bipyridyl compound bearing carboxylic acid groups at the 4,4'-positions. As a versatile building block for self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), its terminal carboxyl groups enable strong and stable attachment to metal oxide surfaces, especially nanocrystalline TiO₂.

The rigid aromatic backbone and electron-withdrawing carboxylic acid groups endow dcbpy with strong coordination ability and chemical stability. It plays a key role in the synthesis of metal–organic complexes widely applied in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Dcbpy-based ligands are essential in ruthenium dyes such as N3, N719, Z907, and K19, contributing to efficient charge injection and improved interface stability.

In SAM-related applications, the dual carboxylic acid groups form robust ester-like linkages with semiconductor surfaces, enhancing molecular alignment and electronic coupling. These features make dcbpy well-suited for constructing electron-selective contact layers in optoelectronic devices.
