Application
Tricresyl phosphate is an isomeric mixture that serves multiple industrial purposes due to its unique chemical properties. As a colorless and odorless oily liquid, it functions primarily as a plasticizer and flame retardant in various materials, including PVC, nitrocellulose, and acrylates. Its role extends to being a solvent for nitrocellulose esters and natural resins and acting as a plasticizer for chlorinated rubber, vinyl plastics, and polystyrene, thereby enhancing their flexibility, toughness, and elasticity. Additionally, tricresyl phosphate is utilized as an antiwear and antifriction additive in synthetic lubricants, and it can also serve as a hydraulic fluid. In fuel applications, it mitigates harmful lead deposits when incorporated into gasoline. Notably, it serves as a mediator in the preparation of uranium-sensitive electrodes and aids in phenol residue recovery in industrial processes. Despite its beneficial applications, it is important to handle tricresyl phosphate with caution due to its potential toxicity, which can lead to severe health issues upon exposure.
