Application
Terpene resin, derived from the polymerization of terpene hydrocarbons sourced from wood, serves as a moisture barrier thanks to its composition primarily from β-pinene polymers. These resins possess the inherent stability of polymeric hydrocarbons, demonstrating resistance to dilute mineral acids, alkalis, and salt solutions due to their almost negligible acid and saponification numbers. Additionally, they maintain their integrity across a broad temperature range, exhibiting changes merely in fluidity. Commercially, these resins vary from viscous liquids to hard, brittle solids, as indicated by their diverse softening points measured by the ASTM ring-and-ball method. Terpene resin is employed in specific applications such as a coating on soft gelatin capsules, not exceeding 0.07% of the capsule's weight, and on ascorbic acid powders or their salts, up to 7% of the powder's weight, illustrating its versatility and efficacy as a moisture barrier.
