Application

Telluric acid serves as a versatile compound known for its unique structural attributes and stability. Comprising colorless crystals, it exists primarily in two structural forms: a monoclinic modification and a cubic modification. The significant monoclinic crystals provide a stable form, whereas the microcrystalline powder often comprises a mix of these forms. This compound is remarkably stable in air and has a formula weight of 229.66. When heated between 100 and 220°C, telluric acid transforms into solid, water-insoluble polymetatelluric acid, which further decomposes into TeO3 above 220°C and eventually into TeO2 and O2 at temperatures of 400°C or higher. Interestingly, when melted in a sealed tube at about 136°C, telluric acid forms a concentrated aqueous solution of polymetatelluric acid along with some polyorthotelluric acid. Overall, telluric acid's ability to convert into various derivatives under controlled conditions makes it a valuable component in chemical processes, attributed to both its conjugate nature as a hydrogentellurate and its status as a tellurium oxoacid.
