Application
Specialty Elastomers are designed to leverage the unique properties of styrene-butadiene thermoplastic elastomers, which arise from the natural incompatibility between polystyrene and polybutadiene blocks. This incompatibility causes these blocks to form separate domains within the material, with rigid polystyrene domains dispersed in a continuous polybutadiene matrix. In everyday conditions, these polystyrene domains act as cross-links and fillers, giving the material the strength akin to a filler-reinforced vulcanized elastomer. When heated above the glass transition temperature of polystyrene (approximately 100°C), these domains become flexible, allowing for melt-processing, although the maximum service temperature for finished components is about 60°C. Specialty Elastomers exhibit similar chemical properties to unvulcanized styrene-butadiene rubber, being soluble in various solvents. These elastomers, including variations like SBS, SIS, and SEBS, offer an efficient and cost-effective solution for producing diverse products, such as footwear, elastic bands, and adhesives, thanks to their robust and adaptable nature tailored through specific polymerization processes.
