Description

Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic “addition polymer” made from the combination of propylene monomers. It is used in a variety of applications including packaging for consumer products, plastic parts for various industries including the automotive industry, special devices like living hinges, and textiles.

Application

Most plastic living hinges (such as those on flip-top bottles) are made of polypropylene because of its fatigue resistance. Polypropylene is used in the manufacture of piping systems. Many plastics used in medical or laboratory applications can be made of polypropylene because it can withstand the heat in an autoclave. Most plastic drums used for dairy products are made of polypropylene sealed with aluminum foil (all heat resistant materials). A common application for polypropylene is bi-oriented polypropylene (BOPP). These BOPP sheets are used to make a variety of materials, including clear bags.

Feature

PP has a high melting point and exhibits excellent thermal resistance, making it an ideal plastic for use in the microwave or dishwasher. Additionally, the material does not produce a reaction when exposed to acids, bases, or detergents and resists fracturing and stress even when flexed.
