Application
Poly(vinyl acetate) serves as a versatile polymer primarily used in adhesives and as a binder for water-based or emulsion paints. Composed of repeating acetoxyethylene units, it is a clear and non-crystalline thermoplastic material that softens at relatively low temperatures. Remarkably stable to light and oxygen, poly(vinyl acetate) can be processed into various forms. Its degree of polymerization ranges from 100 to 5000. While the ester groups in poly(vinyl acetate) are susceptible to base hydrolysis, converting it gradually into polyvinyl alcohol and acetic acid, it can cross-link under alkaline conditions with boron compounds, forming tackifying precipitates or slime. This adaptability makes poly(vinyl acetate) suitable for applications in drug delivery, hemodynamics, wound dressing, and coatings, alongside its primary role in adhesives and paints.
