Application

Poly[N,N'-(1,3-phenylene)isophthalamide] is designed to excel in applications demanding resistance to extreme temperatures and flames. With an impressive melting point of 380-390°C, this aromatic polyamide cannot be processed by conventional melting methods and is thus provided as fibers and paper. The fibers are produced through the extrusion of a polymer solution into hot air, while the paper is made from a mix of chopped fibers and chopped film. This polymer exhibits mechanical properties on par with aliphatic nylons at room temperature, but significantly outperforms them at higher temperatures, maintaining its integrity up to around 200°C. It also retains its electrical insulation properties across this temperature range, resists ignition, and does not produce after-glow. While its chemical resistance is comparable to that of aliphatic nylons, it offers improved resistance to mineral acids. These characteristics make Poly[N,N'-(1,3-phenylene)isophthalamide] ideal for heat and flame protective clothing and for electrical insulating applications where temperature stability is critical.
