Application
The Platinum Iridium Alloy is designed to enhance mechanical properties and resist corrosion while maintaining workability, making it an essential material across various applications. By combining up to 20% iridium with platinum, the alloy maintains significant ductility, though higher iridium content may complicate fabrication. This alloy finds its use in non-standard thermocouples, electrical contacts, and electrodes in medical research due to its toughness and noncorrosive nature. For example, an alloy of 95% platinum and 5% iridium exhibits a Brinell hardness of 170, suited for jewelry production, while a 30% iridium composition offers a hardness of 400, applicable to surgical instruments. Additionally, the 80%-20% blend is ideal for magneto contact points, and the 90%-10% mixture serves well in the electric contacts of industrial control devices. The incorporation of iridium does not affect the platinum's color, and chemical reactivity varies with composition; for example, a 5% alloy dissolves easily in aqua regia, unlike a 30% alloy which dissolves more slowly.
