Application
Nylon 6,6, recognizable by its white pellets, powder, or fibers, is a versatile polyamide known for its strength, toughness, and elasticity. With a molecular structure consisting of two six-carbon monomers, hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid, Nylon 6,6 was first developed by W.H. Carothers in 1935 and patented in 1938 under the name Fiber #66. Its uses range broadly from textiles, brushes, and sutures to cable sheathing, tubing, and industrial components such as bearings, cams, gears, and casings for tools and appliances. Not only is it used in traditional textile applications like clothing, carpets, and tire cords, but it is also valuable in advanced applications such as nanofibrous membranes for osmosis support materials and as separators in lithium-ion batteries. Nylon 6,6's fibers, extruded through a spinneret, are known for their gloss and superior dyeability, being twice as durable as cotton. Furthermore, these fibers can be coated with materials like vinyl to produce lightweight, waterproof fabrics.
