Application

Methyl-β-cyclodextrin, a versatile white powder, serves primarily as a cholesterol-removing agent, effectively disrupting lipid rafts. This randomly methylated form of the cyclic oligosaccharide β-cyclodextrin boasts seven D-(+)-glucopyranose units with randomized hydrogen or methyl groups. Its high solubility and affinity for detergents make it invaluable in membrane protein chemistry, especially for detergent removal from protein-lipid-detergent mixtures to create 2D membrane protein crystals. Additionally, it enhances the aqueous solubility of various compounds and is instrumental in extracting cholesterol from lipid membranes. Notably, at a concentration of 5 mM, Methyl-β-cyclodextrin lowers α-synuclein levels in membrane and detergent-insoluble fractions from B103 neuroblastoma cells transfected with human α-synuclein, as well as in the brains of mice in transgenic models of α-synucleinopathy.
