    Lithium Phenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphinate serves as a water-soluble, cytocompatible Type I photoinitiator ideal for polymerizing hydrogels and other polymeric materials. Its use is particularly advantageous in biological applications due to its enhanced water solubility and increased polymerization rates when exposed to 365 nm light. Furthermore, it can absorb at 400 nm, facilitating polymerization with visible light. These features enable more efficient polymerization kinetics, allowing for cell encapsulation with lower initiator concentrations and longer wavelengths of light, which can reduce toxicity and improve cell viability. While LAP generates free radicals under bioprinting conditions that may be cytotoxic and mutagenic, its concentration is crucial for determining the mechanical strength of 3D-printed scaffolds. Typically, a concentration of 0.05%-1% is used, with 0.1% providing the highest elastic modulus, resulting in superior mechanical properties and excellent biocompatibility.
